There RX 7900 XTX, unveiled in early November and shipping from mid-December, currently represents AMD’s flagship proposition in the consumer graphics card segment for desktop systems. However, the debut on the market was not free from some problems which are currently being investigated by the company. The story involves the MBA (Made by AMD) variants of the RX 7900 XTX that means the models that follow the company’s reference design. These boards would meet a overheating and thermal throttling.
According to reports from some users, during operation the card would reach 110 degrees Celsius in some points, while operating with the fans at maximum speed. The problem would not be so much the temperature itself (according to AMD) but the consequent decrease in performance linked to thermal throttling. AMD recently intervened again on the matter declaring:
We are aware that a small number of users are experiencing unexpected thermal throttling on AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards (the reference models made by AMD). Users experiencing this should contact AMD Support.
For now, the manufacturer does not go overboard by clarifying what the possible causes of the card’s anomalous behavior could be, but invites users to contact the support service. For now, simple hypotheses are being advanced, including a non-homogeneous contact pressure of the card’s cooling plate. A possible remedy could coincide with the replacement of the TIM (Thermal Interface Pad), but on the one hand there is no certainty that this is a definitive solution and on the other hand putting a hand to a newly purchased card with the risk of invalidating the warranty it’s an encouraging prospect for new buyers.
Developments are awaited: PowerColor, which directly sells the RX 7900 XTX MBA, is also trying to clarify the matter by collecting feedback from buyers.
