Well yes, the website Wikipedia recently received a small interface update. Nothing transcendental in fact, but considering that the site has remained unchanged in appearance for at least a couple of decades and is still in the top ten of the 10 most visited web pages in the world, this is undoubtedly news worthy of mention. The update is being released in these hours on all language versions and comes just after the recent birthday of the site, which last January 15 he turned 22 years old.
Wikimedia Foundation, which manages the Wikipedia project, announced in a post the launch of the new updated interface, aimed at making the site more accessible, easier to navigate and much easier to consult in any language. Then we find an improved search, an updated header and other news as we will see shortly.
The changes introduced are these.
- An improved search experience with images and descriptions that make it easier to find items, leading to a 30% increase in user searches based on testing.
- More well-placed language switching tools that enable multilingual readers and editors to find their preferred language faster and switch between languages.
- An updated sticky header with commonly used links like Search, Page Name, and Scrollable Sections.
- A table of contents that provides context about the article.
To develop the new interface Over 30 different groups of volunteers from around the world have worked with Wikimedia, for example from countries such as India, Indonesia, Ghana, Argentina and many others. As mentioned above, this is not a drastic change, so much so that many may very well not notice it. The goal of the update is to make Wikipedia a more modern page and more similar to its mobile counterpart.
