A 50Gbps service on fiber could soon be a reality thanks to Open Fiber. Last week, the leading Italian wholesale fiber company experimented in a controlled environment new ultra broadband access service 50G-PON (50Giga) which tomorrow will be able to allow consumer and business services with speeds on the access network of up to 50 Gbps – practically 500 times compared to a common 100 Mbps copper-fiber connection.

Open Fiber claims that the test results have confirmed the potential of this update both in terms of bandwidth and latency times (equal to a few tens of microseconds). It should be remembered that the use of laser equipment upstream and downstream of the optical fiber is normally envisaged, but not updates to the basic infrastructure; in practice the optical fiber is always the same.

“These features will be essential to continue to meet the needs of users in terms of quality of experience and speed which are constantly and rapidly growing: the Agcom 2022 report shows, in fact, that the average monthly traffic per user on the fixed network has undergone a increase of 87% compared to 2019. Furthermore, this new technological frontier will open up a series of new service scenarios and will be decisive in the binding of the access network elements of 5G mobile networks”, emphasizes Open Fiber.

The central theme, often forgotten, is that the new generation mobile networks – both 4G and 5G – need a greater capillarity of broadcast antennas (microcells) and a large transmission capacity. The 50G-PON technology coupled with the node density of the PON network once again confirms that the FTTH access network is the key platform for fixed-mobile convergence. A sort of enabler for new applications that will travel on the 5G network, from home automation to assisted driving, from the Metaverse to AI. Not only. The Open Fiber experimentation demonstrated in the field that the new 50 gigabyte service can proceed in parallel, and without interference, with already widespread services such as the 10 Gbps XGS-PON. And this means that the providers could envisage the supply and sale of connectivity services with different performances on the same network.
