Windows 11, unveiled the new look of File Explorer

Apparently Microsoft is working on a Major update to File Explorer on Windows 11thanks to which several key areas of the app will enjoy both a visual and functional review, with a more modern design and improvements in integration with OneDrive and Microsoft 365, as aired just a few days ago.

Internal drafts obtained from Windows Central show that the updated app will feature a revamped header with changes to the file directory box, a revised search box, and a new “home” button. Existing header buttons, such as “new”, “copy” and “paste”, will be moved to the file/folder view just below it.

The first few screenshots also show that the home page itself will be updated and have better integration with Microsoft 365. Along the top will be a feed of “recommended” files, which will be presented with larger thumbnails, making it easier to see those suggested.

Looking at the navigation box on the left, we see that it will be updated with the introduction of highlighted and more rounded buttons and other similar changes. The details pane will receive a significant update to align with the rest of File Explorer, including integration with Microsoft 365 and a richer experience viewing file details. Tighter integration with Microsoft 365 means users can see recent email conversations and comments on files shared via the cloud among multiple colleagues.

While it’s too soon to tell for sure, it appears that many of the updates to these areas of File Explorer they will also improve interaction on touch displays, which we recall, with Windows 11 shows no difference in terms of interface appearance. It also appears that Microsoft is working on a richer photo viewing experience with File Explorer, as a new “Gallery” area will be introduced. Within it, users will be able to hover over files and view larger thumbnails. Finally, the source believes that Microsoft is considering introducing “labels” in File Explorerwhich would allow users to organize and categorize specific files using keywords and colors, similar to what is possible in the macOS Finder app.

The update looks quite significant and Microsoft could make it available sometime during 2023, most likely in the fall to coincide with the 23H2 version of the operating system.
