According to a new report, Microsoft is working on a new version of the Edge browser, called “Phoenix”, which aims to differentiate itself from the basic Edge version and from its main competitors, Chrome above all.
Phoenix is for now a simple internal concept that the company has been working on since the summer of 2022. It integrates several unique features, some of which are already available in the preview versions of Microsoft Edge. Among these, there is for example the ability to view two web pages side by side in a single tabto. The development process is happening slowly and the first information comes thanks to Twitter user, WalkingCat, who shared a short clip of the browser in action.
Thus we discover that Microsoft is also considering the idea of turn Edge into a system-wide password manager, therefore more ingrained than the current one, as well as allowing users to configure Edge during the initial Windows setup. Edge’s slow progress in the desktop market is a clear signal that Microsoft needs to do more to offer customers a more appealing product: Edge Phoenix could be the breath of fresh air that Microsoft needs in terms of browsers.

Finally, we discover that Microsoft is also working on one new Tab Activity Center feature, which will provide insights and analytics into browser usage over time, just like Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing on an iPhone or Android device. Phoenix will also aim to offer better integration of the browser with Windows, allowing the user to configure it together with Windows during the initial contact.
At the moment it is not clear if Microsoft plans to release Edge Phoenix in one go or if it will be used internally, perhaps to develop functions to gradually insert into the version already present in Windows 11. We will talk about it again as soon as there is fresh information.
