Impossible to ignore the environment in 2023 politicsand, in fact, it is mentioned in all the programs of the parties running for the regional elections in Lombardy, in positions of medium visibility. If, however, this is a fact and must be acknowledged, it is quite another to expect the candidates’ proposals to go beyond overly simplistic slogans. Compared to 2018, a lot of water has passed under the bridge, and today nobody, absolutely nobody, can delude themselves that climate change is an exaggeration by scientists and environmentalists.
The explicit denialism of Donald Trump or Jair Bolsonaro has no place in the programs of those who contend for the government of Italy’s royal locomotive. The keywords are all there. But something is missing. The numbers. They are few, and without figures it will be difficult to verify who will have been able to keep the commitments undertaken. At the municipal and regional level, the newspaper counts a lot (translated: health and economy, i.e. the shopping cart). The environment does not pull as to the policies. But it’s a mistake. Because one thing is certain: without results in the protection of the territory and the climate, for what is one of the most polluted regions of Europe the future will remain lead gray.
The programs:
- Popular union with Mara Ghidorzi
- The third pole with Letizia Moratti
- The centre-right coalition with Attilio Fontana
- The centre-left with Pierfrancesco Majorino
Popular union with Mara Ghidorzi
At the time of writing, the vision of Mara Ghidorzi, the candidate of Unione Popolare, can be reconstructed from the interviews circulating on the Net. “We want a Lombardy that says stop to the logic of major eventssoil consumption and the wild overbuilding of our territory”, says the sociologist. Among the priorities, “the care and protection of the territory, stopping the consumption of the soil and the wild overbuilding, even disguised as fake vertical woods”beyond “greenery and parks as a common good for all”.
The third pole with Letizia Moratti
Legislature objectives for the former mayor of Milan are “the reorganization of the energy sector with the production of energy from renewable sources, the reduction of polluting emissions and the valorisation of the environmental, landscape and green economy heritage”. As regards the watersMoratti promise to “identify illegal discharges and provide for their rapid closure”, “create basins and reservoirs for conservation”, improve existing purification plants and build new ones, but also to encourage the construction of rainwater collection tanks (i.e. the fraction of rain that is not absorbed by the ground and can be used usefully). The former Welfare councilor promises attention to soil consumption“acting on the residual buildability of the lots already built”, but also reclamation and systematic monitoring of the Lombardy area.
The chapter dedicated to the mountains is extensive (a theme dear to the League, and here it is difficult not to hear the echoes of the break with the lumbard) with support for entrepreneurs, upgrading of means of transport, recovery of pastures, paths and forests. As far as agriculture and livestock are concerned, Moratti proposes to encourage the transition from intensive to extensive agricultural practices, less polluting: a complex point, which should be explained in detail so as not to remain a slogan, because the production needs of the sector in Lombardy are high. There is no shortage of a wink from the milk farmers, this too is usually a territory lumbard. Finally, the document talks about improving heating systems and tree planting initiatives.
The centre-right coalition with Attilio Fontana
The outgoing president proposes a vision of sustainability and the environment based on innovation, “that favors the protection of territorial agriculture, makes the use of resources more efficient, enhances the territory, guarantees mobility”. Trump-like denialism banned, the solution, via Bellerio, can come from technology, trying to change the status quo as little as possible. A reassuring vision for a public reluctant to novelty.
