There will come a day when distinguishing between articles written by an author and those generated by artificial intelligence will be increasingly difficult, and perhaps already today there are technologies such as the one offered by ChatGPT, which although not perfect, are already being used and abused by press organizations. But let’s not talk about small companies, as it is recent news that another important publishing house is using AI to generate articles and short social content, as a solution to save on hiring.
Arena Group Holdings, a media company whose brands include popular U.S. newspapers such as Sports Illustrated, TheStreet, Parade and Men’s Journal, said it is partnering with AI language startups Jasper and Nota to expand assistance in content generation.
But as in other cases, some tests would have already been carried out, and in particular Men’s Journal has already published a few articles that were written using tools like ChatGPT, by OpenAI.
The articles’ signatures, two in particular, are attributed to flesh-and-blood editors, however a disclaimer clearly indicates the use of automated software at the top of these:
This article is a curation of expert advice from Men’s Fitness, using deep learning tools for research combined with OpenAI’s large language model for various stages of the workflow. This article has been reviewed and verified by our editorial team.
We therefore speak of a ‘reassuring’ hybrid approach, where alongside the use of software for the automatic generation of the text, there is still a revision carried out by a human being in the flesh. And given the precedents this is good news…
In fact, CNET has made headlines for publishing AI-generated articles after new owner, Red Ventures, decided to cut costs. However, the review of these articles has shown that many of them contained errors of form that required heavy corrections. In the meantime, Google has also ‘smelt’ the danger of new chatbots and AI technologies, therefore it is recent news that it is pushing the accelerator to arrive on the markets as soon as possible with new solutions of this kind such as chatbots and many other software.
