Discord slows down some Nvidia GPUs: the company releases a patch

We point out that Discord is the protagonist of an issue that affects the latest NVIDIA graphics cards. The matter is quite simple: it has been noticed that there is a drastic drop in performance for some graphics cards, especially the newer ones, when these are used with the voice chat service.

The problem started to occur after one of the latest updates and mainly with graphics cards that use GDDR6 memory, causing massive system slowdowns for users who have Discord active. The problem would be caused byinability to reach full speed while the software is runningeffectively neutering GPU performance.

The good news is that NVIDIA is aware of this and promised a quick release of a software updatehowever for those who do not want to wait there is also a temporary solution which consists of disable hardware acceleration in Discord settings.

This should fix the performance issue for affected users, although it may affect Discord performance. Otherwise it is possible to get around the bug by performing a more complex procedure described by NVIDIA itself (in SOURCE), which we recommend only to more experienced users.

Discord was recently the protagonist of a major performance update which introduced the compatibility of the AV1 codec with the latest generation RTX 40 graphics cards. Thanks to this novelty it is now possible to stream content up to 4K at 60 fps at 8 mbps, but you must have a paid Nitro subscription.

Nvidia says it has finally fixed the Discord anomaly that was causing performance issues with some current generation graphics cards. According to a tweet from the company, the resolving patch will be downloaded automatically when you log in to Windows, so you won’t need to rely on temporary solutions like the one we proposed above in the original article. Nivida had also proposed another interim fix, but the process wasn’t exactly straightforward and involved downloading a profile manager and then exporting, editing, and re-importing profiles.
