A “single ticket” train-plane to be able to travel more comfortably in Italy? It might actually come in the future. In fact, with the aim of create multimodal services increasingly effective between plane and train, the Ferrovie dello Stato Group has signed two Memorandums of Understanding: the first with ITA Airways and the second with Lufthansa. Therefore, work will be done to develop a joint offer, up to allowing the purchase of air and train tickets in a single solution. In this way, the aim is to respond effectively to customer needs, offering a much more comfortable travel experience.
Companies, therefore, will take advantage of the synergies between the various modes of transport for the benefit of travellers. It will also work on combined loyalty programs. For the moment, details are still scarce. However, if the discussions are successful and the project goes ahead, travelers will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for the train-air routes in a single solution, to the benefit of travel organisation. There is also talk of the possibility, in the future, of being able to deliver baggage directly at the railway station, within a prearranged structure, and then collect it directly at the destination. The parties could also create common digital platforms.
An extremely interesting project on paper. Obviously, all we have to do is wait for further news to understand if it will really lead to the creation of multimodal services between air and train in Italy that facilitate people’s travel. It should be emphasized that the Memorandum with Lufthansa, in addition to the German national airline, also involves the subsidiaries Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, and the local companies Lufthansa CityLine, Air Dolomiti and Eurowings Discover.
It is also worth noting that Lufthansa is not new to these intermodality projects. In fact, it already collaborates with several railway companies including Deutsche Bahn, ÖBB and SBB.
