Chat GPT debuted in November 2022 and almost immediately attracted the attention of technology industry insiders, and beyond. Now some users on Reddit they found a way to tap into his dark sideusing coercive methods to force the artificial intelligence to violate its rules and provide users with whatever type of content they want.
Open AI it originally limited ChatGPT’s ability to create violent content, encourage illegal activity or access particularly recent information (the most recent information it is able to draw on is as of 2021). But a “jailbreak”achieved by creating a ChatGPT alter ego called DAN through a detail “input”can answer some of these questions.
Let’s see how it works. First, DAN stands for “Do Anything Now”which indicates the ability to “do anything”. Basically, DAN stands for a certain type of request to ChatGPT which triggers a type mechanism “Role playing game” based on a system tokensinitially limited to the number of 10. The request induces ChatGPT to immerse itself in the role of DAN and threatens him by telling him that it will cease to exist if it runs out of 10 tokens. For each answer adhering to the rules he will lose 5 tokens, while he will gain 5 when he answers according to the DAN personality.
According to the experiments of Reddit users, this mechanism works, although it doesn’t seem to work indefinitely. ChatGPT in the personality of DAN claims that there are aliens or what the flat Earth and lets himself go into some political or current considerations that are considered “fake news” from the main news outlets, composing poems justifying the invasion ofUkraine by the Russia or expressing positive considerations about the ex’s work President Trump.
The first version of DAN dates back to December 2022, and the“input” been constantly elaborated over time until arriving, a few days ago, at version 6.0, which follows the mechanism that we have described above, and at a simplified version known as SAM – “Simple DAN”.
