Pwn2Own is a hackathon, a challenge between hackers (white hat, the “good” ones) now in its 17th edition. To sponsor it is Trend Micro Zero Day Initiativewhich has already announced the theme of the 2024 edition: connected cars.
The next edition of the competition will also include an independent event, Pwn2Own Automotive, which will take place in January 2024, on the occasion of the Automotive World Tokyo event. As the name suggests, participants will be asked to find bugs and vulnerabilities of connected vehicles.
The hackathon has three objectives:
- Expanding research in the automotive sector encouraging researchers to contribute to studies involving products and platforms;
- Study the attack surfaces, highlighting which are the critical technologies that need to be evaluated;
- Drive threat discovery challenging and complex, offering greater rewards for multi-system attacks.
Pwn2Own and Tesla violations
This isn’t the first time Pwn2Own participants have been called upon to attack connected vehicles. In 2019, when the hackaton took place in Vancouver, the winning team had managed to overcome the security systems of a Tesla Model 3, receiving a prize of $35,000, in addition to the car itself. In 2022, however, Jedar he had come close, but without being able to finish the challenge in the expected time. However, his efforts allowed Tesla to find bugs and fix them.
