Tile has rolled out an option for its trackers that is bound to cause controversy: It makes it impossible for anyone but the owner to locate the tags. Tile says the option is meant for protect victims of stalkingand implements several very strict conditions to avoid becoming a tool please of stalkers. To activate the “Anti-Theft Mode”, in fact, the owner of the tracker must:
- provide a copy of a legally valid document
- consent to the sharing of Tile data with law enforcement agencies
- agree to pay a $1 million fine if you are later accused of stalking.
The reasoning of Tile and its management is that the anti-stalking measures introduced so far have not worked. Apple AirTags have a feature whereby a user is alerted if there’s an unidentified tracker nearby, and Tile has introduced a similar technology via the official app’s Scan and Secure feature; but the same functionality can be exploited by any thieves or stalkers to detect trackers to be neutralized.
According to Tile, drastically increase the consequences deriving from the improper use of these products is a good solution to discourage any ill-intentioned; it is a principle on which one can agree on paper, but in reality the correlation is much less easy to demonstrate – a clear example comes from the USA: since the death penalty exists, homicides should be almost zero, and instead this is not the case. The problem is that those who decide to commit certain types of crimes very rarely think about the consequences – or hope / believe that they will get away with it.
Tile does not specify who the eventual million dollars will go to. In any case, the roll-out of the new feature has already startedand should arrive to all users within the next few weeks.
