Twitter will make pay the two-factor authentication system via SMS starting from 20 March 2023. The option will in fact become exclusive to Twitter Blue, the premium version of the social network which in Italy has a monthly cost ranging from 7 euros for the annual plan subscribed via the web to 11 euros for the subscription via iOS and Android.

Text-based authentication is certainly not the best existing authentication system for Twitter, considering the fact that in the past there have been numerous cases of data theft related to this method. A physical security key or aauthentication apps are much more reliable.

While it has historically been a popular form of two-factor authentication, unfortunately we have seen phone number-based 2FA being used – and abused – by bad actors. Therefore, starting today, we will no longer allow accounts to subscribe to the SMS method of 2FA unless they are a Twitter Blue subscriber. […] Non-subscribers to Twitter Blue will have 30 days to opt out of this method and subscribe to another. After March 20, 2023, we will no longer allow non-Twitter Blue subscribers to use text messages as a 2FA method.

And there are also those who say that the decision to pay for the authentication system and two factors via SMS is linked to the fact that text messages… they cost, and this would certainly not be the best moment from an economic-financial point of view for the company. However, it must be said that Twitter had begun to eliminate the use of SMS even before Elon Musk took over the ownership of the platform.

Twitter announces that from March 20 onwards, accounts with two-factor authentication via SMS will meet again automatically disabled the service. “Disabling 2FA text messaging doesn’t automatically disassociate your phone number from your Twitter account“. The advice, at this point, is to use a security key or an authenticator app.
