There European Commission banned TikTok from all electronic devices used by staff, both private and corporate, for problems relating to the security of personal data. The union executive communicated the new ban on the morning of February 23 in line with a series of much broader bans imposed on the Chinese social network by the US government.
“For protect the Commission’s data and increase its cyber securitythe Corporate Management Council of the European Commission has decided to suspend the use of the TikTok application on corporate and personal devices used to access the Commission’s mobile services”, reads the communication reported by Euroactiv.
All staff will have to adapt to the new directives by March 15thotherwise you will lose access to applications linked to the Commission, such as e-mail or Skype services. Other institutions, such as the Council or Parliament, are also likelyadopt the same prohibition, even if in the case of the Eurochamber it could take longer.
This is the latest squeeze by Western institutions against TikTok and the first measure taken against the Chinese social network by the European Union and in the European Unionafter EU commissioners for justice, transparency, competition and home affairs warned Shou Zi Chew, the app’s chief executive, to fully comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The decision came after TikTok admitted last November that its employees in China may have access to users’ personal data worldwide and after the United States the app has been prohibited on government devices, at the state and federal levels, and at many universities. No European national government has yet adopted similar policies, but the trend could change after the decision of the European Commission.
