On the occasion of the MWC, OnePlus confirmed that thewill launch its first foldable smartphone in 2023. To be exact the foldable device will be launched in second half of 2023. There is still to wait then, but if nothing else there is confirmation of what has been hypothesized (and leaked) in recent weeks.
Let’s take a step back. At the end of January in the database of China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) two names had leaked that suggested OnePlus folding devices. It was about OnePlus V Fold And OnePlus V Flip. The thought flies to the two classic formats, the clamshell and the booklet one, now taken up by several telephony brands.
The announcement of OnePlus, however, speaks of one foldable smartphone. Apparently, therefore, the brand first wants to test the waters with a single model. In this regard, let’s read the statements of the CEO and President of OnePlus, Kinder Liu:
Our first foldable will feature OnePlus’ signature fast & smooth experience. But it will not be just a simple folding: the new OnePlus flagship phone will in fact have a unique design, in terms of construction and technologies. We want to launch a device that reaches the top in terms of performance within the current foldable device market.
A single foldable, characterized by the OnePlus experience and a unique design: in short, a lot of irons in the fire, and also given the good things OPPO Find N2 Flip has, it is possible that OnePlus will keep these promises. Although the unique design will be a bit difficult to achieve, since as a foldable device it has to submit to some “restrictions”.
It remains to understand whether it will be a clamshell leaflet or a booklet. To keep costs down, and consequently also the introductory price, it is possible that OnePlus will opt for the first of the two, but it is still too early to tell.
