Nissan e-4ORCE is an electric all-wheel drive system developed by the Japanese automaker expressly for its electrified vehicles with e-Power powertrain like on the new X-Trail and 100% electric like on the new Ariya.
The e-4ORCE technology has been tested on the snowy mountain trails of the Pyrenees, on the border between Spain and France, and on the icy circuit of Andorrathe highest permanent ski slope in the world located at an altitude of 2,400 metres. Snow and icetherefore, perfect scenarios to put the qualities of the electric four-wheel drive developed by the Japanese manufacturer to the test.
ELECTRIC ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
The e-4ORCE system exploits the presence of two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear to better manage power delivery and always guarantee the best possible traction. Nissan tells that the system distributes the driving force between the front and rear axles and regulates braking on individual wheels, reacting to changes in grip in just one ten-thousandth (1/10,000) of a second.
Thus, the electric all-wheel drive developed by Nissan makes it possible to make the vehicle’s behavior always predictable in all situations, to make driving safer. Also, the regenerative braking on the two motors, front and rear, increases the efficiency of energy recovery and reduces pitching. This translates into greater electric driving range and greater comfort for the driver and passengers even in the event of sudden braking.
The system developed by Nissan can be a valid aid in many driving situations but still within the limits of physics…. Electronics, however refined, always go up to a certain point.
NISSAN X-TRAIL AND ARIYA E-4ORCE
We recall that on the Nissan X-Trail that we have already had the opportunity to test, we find two electric motors, the front one with 204 HP (150 kW) and the rear one with 136 HP (100 kW), with a total system power of 213 HP ( 157 kW). The necessary electrical energy is supplied by a 116 kW (158 HP) three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with 250 Nm of torque derived from Infiniti. This unit only works as a generator to power the little one approximately 1.8 kWh battery and the two electric motors. Under no circumstances does the internal combustion engine provide traction to the wheels. We are therefore talking about a series hybrid where only the electric motors move the wheels.
With a full battery and at low speed, it is also possible to travel with the internal combustion engine off for short distances. It takes 7 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h, while top speed reaches 180 km/h.
Instead, Nissan Ariya with e-4ORCE technology can count on a powertrain with a total power of 306 hp (225 kW) which allows you to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Everything is powered by an 87 kWh battery capable of offering a range of up to 509 km according to the WLTP cycle.
DRIVING ON SNOW AND ICE
In the Andorra circuit we had two areas available where we could test the cars: a square for exercises such as slalom, acceleration on low grip surfaces, emergency braking and hill starts and a circuit in which to fully put the e-4ORCE technology to the test.
In the Nissan X-Trail, the two engines never deliver their respective maximum powers simultaneously. e-4ORCE technology makes driving on snow and ice safe and enjoyable. The trajectory is always maintained correctly and the electronics correct any type of error caused by the unexpected.
The Ariya electric crossover, although heavier than X-Trail, moves well on snow and ice thanks to the e-4ORCE system which acts precisely and punctually, correcting the trajectories, allowing for a fluid and dynamic driving experience. The e-4ORCE system also distributes power to the single wheel and not just to the entire axle. Also, the throttle response on this model it is better than that of the X-Trail.
At the first hint of slippery pavement, the action of the e-4ORCE system on the wheels of the cars is immediately perceptible. Fast mixed becomes more fun to tackle, even in the event of a mistake in the trajectory. The system is able to correct errors based on steering and pedal inputs, returning the car to the right line and avoiding skidding on exit. Even during the uphill climb to reach the Andorra circuit, with tight and steep hairpin bends, the comfort and safety on both cars was remarkable.
The e-4ORCE system it is also useful off-road allowing you to tackle difficult terrain with great confidence.
PRICES
Speaking of prices for the Italian market, the new Nissan X-Trail e-Power with e-4ORCE technology starts at 42,600 euros in the Acenta trim. Instead, the Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE 87 kWh EVOLVE starts at 68,300 euros.
