At European level, ten years ago the average difference between the earnings of men and women was equal to 16.4% and decreased in 2021 to 12.7%. A contraction equal to 3.7 percentage points. In the period, the highest value was reached in 2013when he arrived at the 7%while the lowest one was seen in 2020when the pay gap between Italian men and women fell to 4.2%.
Not all sectors are the same
As mentioned, iThe 5% gender pay gap recorded in Italy in 2021 is an average value. The situation varies, and greatly, depending on the professional sector. There are fields, such as themining activityin which women earn the 5.2% more than their male colleagues. And others where the sector is far from the average, as the graph below shows.
The sector in which the gap between men and women is highest is that of entertainment world, where the first come to earn the 62.1% more than the latter. This is followed by professional activities with a gender pay gap of 23.9%finance and insurance with the 23.7% and healthcare with 21%. The most equitable sector is that of water and waste management, where the wage gap in favor of males is just 0.7%.
