Airspeeders is the nascent category, otherwise known as EXA Series, of competitions with special flying vehicles. It is technically about eVTOLvertical take-off electric aircraft, in many respects similar to giant drones.

The company behind the project, Alauda Aeronauticshas already organized the first event, using Airspeeders MK3, which competed in remotely piloted races.

In fact, during development, for the safety of the pilots, the vehicles are controlled via a land station, just as if they were gigantic radio-controlled objects. But the goal is to get to real races, with real pilots on boardand for this you will need the MK4 model.


The new version has just been presented in London, for the moment only through images and digital renderings. Appearance changes radically, ed MK4 looks much more like a single-seater of the world of motorsport, rather than a drone. There are now also front and rear winglets, plus a design that is basically the opposite of the MK3, with a pointed front end.

But there is also a big news for the propulsion. Airspeeders will no longer have replaceable lithium batteries, but instead they will focus on hydrogenthrough a system that Alauda calls Thunderstrike Hydrogen Turbogenerator. With an output of a whopping 1,000 kW, it seems the idea is to directly “burn” hydrogen in a particular engine, rather than fuel cells to power an electric motor.
