All of London is about to become an ultra low emission zone, here are the incentives for scrapping

On August 29, 2023 the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) of London will be further extended, practically embracing the whole city. This means that the amount of unfit vehicles will increase, and owners have only two choices: not to use it, or pay the fee that allows access, the proceeds of which are reinvested in public transport.

But Mayor Sadiq Khan has decided to help some citizens by setting up a fund incentives dedicated to the scrapping of polluting vehicles. Unlike other similar provisions, however, i 110 million pounds they are dedicated only to certain categories.

Londoners receiving certain income-based benefits and untested disability benefits can apply for cash grants of up to £2,000 (around €2,278) to scrap their non-compliant cars or motorbikes. Alternatively they can choose to receive a higher value through two free annual passes for bus and tram.

Disabled people wishing to scrap or upgrade a non-compliant wheelchair accessible vehicle will be able to apply for grants of £5,000 (about €5,695).

Charities, sole proprietorships and businesses with 10 or fewer employees registered in London can apply for the demolition of a van (£5,000 grant) or minibus (£7,000 grant), the retrofitting of certain vans or minibuses (£5,000 grant) or the scrapping and replacement of a van or minibus with an all-electric vehicle (£7,500 or £9,500 respectively). The largest grant, in euros, is equivalent to around 10,800 euros.
