In just two days, Amazon announced the closure of three services for Indiathat is to say:
- Amazon Distribution, a wholesale service designed for small neighborhood shops (“kirana”) in some areas of India, especially in the Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli areas. The announcement dates back to November 25th.
- Amazon Academy, an online teaching platform for high school students that launched last year. The announcement dates back to November 24th.
- AmazonFood, a food delivery service which had debuted in May 2020 in some parts of Bangalore and has progressively expanded to other parts of the city. The announcement dates back to November 25th.
The official notes say that this type of decision is not taken lightly and that where possible we will try to work gradually, minimizing the difficulties for the various partners. In particular, we already have some initial sketches of the timeline:
- Amazon Food will close permanently on December 29 of this year.
- The closure of Amazon Distribution will take place in stages.
- The closure of Amazon Academy will take place in phases and will begin in August 2023. Any subscriptions used only partially will be refunded in full.
The company has not offered official reasons for the decision, but it is interesting to note that it comes at a decidedly delicate moment for the company (which in recent days has announced the layoff of over 10,000 people) and more generally for the global economy. At the same time, Amazon is known to have invested large sums (about $7 billion) in what is essentially the world’s largest growing market, but results so far have been meager.
More than anything else, competition is extremely fierce: in 2021, ecommerce sales were significantly lower than those of Flipkart, owned by Walmart – we’re talking about $ 23 billion against 18-20 billion. Recently, by the way, the local billionaire Mukesh Ambani and his group Reliance Retail launched a shopping service on WhatsApp that is very popular.
