The Windows subsystem for Androidwhich allows Windows 11 to run apps developed for Google’s operating system, has officially reached the stable shapeafter more than a year of field tests, version 1 has finally arrived. This was announced by Cory Hendrixson, developer of Microsoft, in the past few hours on Twitter, saying that the WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android) is in distribution for everyone in 31 markets and provides over 50,000 apps (thanks to the partnership with Amazon and its Appstore).

To be picky, it should be noted that “version 1” is a formal name: in fact the latest build of the WSA is 2209.40000.26.0, as Microsoft’s official page indicates, and it was released just last night. The changelog of the new version indicates:
- Camera HAL improvements
- Clipboard stability improvements
- Improved multi-threading performance (more than eight cores)
- Improvements to the security of the transmission of the graphic data stream
- Stability improvements for package launches
- Security updates for ANGLE and GSK
- Telemetry noted with package installation sources
- Fixed window with legal information
- Linux kernel security updates
- Platform stability improvements
- Upgrade to Chromium WebView 105
The achievement of the stable version certainly does not mean that Microsoft will stop developing the functionality, on the contrary: there is already a very specific roadmap and quite ambitious about the next things to work on. Below is the image found on the project’s GitHub page:
As we can see, there are eight distinctly Android features yet to be implemented:
- Widget
- Bluetooth direct access (and BLE)
- File backup and restore
- File transfer
- Hardware DRM
- Picture-in-Picture (PiP)
- Quick Tiles
- USB
The company said it is working on two functions on this list, namely PiP and file transfer; in addition, the roadmap includes shortcuts, local network access by default and most of all update to Android 13the latest version of the OS whose source code was released a few weeks ago (along with the stable build for Pixel smartphones).
