In recent years we have seen Google invest a lot of effort in the smartphone market, both in terms of hardware and in terms of software. Android is increasingly refined in terms of graphics and functionality, with Google that could soon introduce one very interesting feature.

Those who are closest to the world of Apple and iPhones they will have heard of Continuity CameraApple’s service that allows you to use your own iPhones as webcam connected to macOS, useful during video calls. The same road would be under development by Google for Android.
Mishaal Rahman has in fact found some interesting references recently introduced in the AOSP code. These are directly linked to a feature that is currently named DeviceAsWebcam. This feature should be directly integrated in Android and would be the equivalent of Continuity Camera for devices with the green robot.
So with this feature it will be possible to use any smartphone equipped with Android as a webcam for your PC.
Wide compatibility is expected on notebooks and desktop PCs. The protocol for connecting and accessing the hardware of the Android smartphone should work fine analogous compared to what already happens with the connection to internal memory of the device when connected via cable to a PC.
At the moment we have no directions on when this feature might debut. The hypothesis is that Google is preparing the ground to then launch it with Android 14which will officially debut in the second half of this year.
