Apple releases the first Beta of iOS 16.4 and as always it does it only for the developers registered in the program and who will therefore be able to download the new firmware directly via OTA or even on iTunes. There are many new additions from Apple and they expect new emojis but also support for push notifications for the web plus news for Apple Music and more. Let’s see it all below:
Apple: here are the news of iOS 16.4 in Beta 1
New emojis
iOS 16.4 Beta 1 first introduces 15 new Unicode emoji characters which were first approved in September 2022. There are several of them and they include a shaking head, a pink heart and a blue heart or a gray heart, the donkey, the moose, the black bird, goose, wing, jellyfish, hyacinth, pea pod, ginger, fan, comb, flute, maracas, and a variety of left and right hand options.
Notification support in Push for web
Websites that are added to the home screen on an iPhone or iPad as a web app can push Web push notifications in iOS 16.4/iPadOS 16.4, just like on the Mac leveraging Push API, Notifications API and Service Workers. Like on the Mac, the iPhone or iPad will prompt the user to allow the web app to send notifications, and notifications can be managed per web app in the Notifications section of the Settings app. Web app notifications will work just like notifications from other apps, showing them on the lock screen, in Notification Center, and on a paired Apple Watch.
New features in Podcasts on iPhone, iPad and CarPlay
Apple has made several updates to the app Podcasts.Channel access is available in the Library and Up Next section and now allows you to resume episodes, launch saved episodes, and remove episodes you want to skip. Soon users will also have it availablenew toolsto manage the Queued tab. For example, simply tap and hold a show graphic to remove it from the queue. Finally, users will be able to view how many unplayed episodes are available at the top of each show page, identify “Early Access” episodes made available as part of their Apple Podcasts subscriptions, and more.
Finally, iOS 16.4 includes improvements to the Podcasts app forCarPlay, including access to the Up Next tab and Recent Plays. Also, in the tabYou discoverthere are now editorially curated podcast recommendations.
New for Apple Music
A subtle change some users may notice after installing iOS 16.4 is the addition of theprofile picture of the user in the Library tab of the Music app. Previously, your profile picture only appeared on tabsListen nowAndBrowse. By tapping the picture, you can access your Apple Music profile and other related settings.
Also, the playlist menu now displays artwork covers in a smaller size, so that multiple playlists fit on the screen at the same time. Some buttons in the app have also been slightly changed. However, unlike Apple Podcasts, Apple Music has not received any new features for now.
New HomeKit architecture
Apple hasreverted to the new HomeKit architecture, removed from iOS 16.2 for some bugs. iPhone and iPad users who have not yet updated to the new architecture will see the “Home Update Available” option after upgrading to iOS 16.4.
The new HomeKit architecture is intended to improve the reliability and efficiency of communication between smart home accessories and Apple devices, and is something Apple has been developing since iOS 16 was announced at WWDC in June 2022. The update it had been retired due to bugs and installation problems.
Mastodon in iMessage
The applicationMessages now supports rich previews for Mastodon postswhen going to share a link to a post in an iMessage conversation. It brings us Mastodon support on par with Twitter integration for tweet previews. This goes beyond the standard web link previews that posts try to fetch for any web URL, which doesn’t include content like the Mastodon post body.
Changes in the activation of the Beta version
With the iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4 betas, those who are Members of the Apple developer program can activate developer betas directly from the Update section software in the Settings app. This will eliminate the need to install a profile from the Developer Center to get developer betas, simplifying the process of downloading betas. There is also an option for public beta testers who want to install updates with less hassle.
This will end the public sharing of beta profiles developer account because installing a developer beta will require each person to sign in to an Apple ID linked to a developer account.
