The Computer History Museum today released the Apple Lisa source code, including system and native application code. The deal coincides with the 40th anniversary of the release of Apple’s enterprise system on January 19, 1983.
Intended for corporate users, the Apple Lisa had a base price of nearly $10,000. Its high price, along with several floppy disk and software problems, made it a failed product in terms of sales. Although it was quickly replaced by the much more affordable Macintosh and Lisa 2 after just two years, the Apple Lisa was notable for using a graphical user interface, which was an innovative feature at the time.

Apple Lisa it came with various integrated software, such as a text editor, a spreadsheet and graphics application, and much more. As for the UI Apple had inspired by Xerox PARC’s Smalltalkbut had implemented some unique features that laid the foundations for later very successful operating systems, both Apple with MacOS, and Microsoft with its Windows.
The source code related to Apple Lisa available on the Computer History Museum website and was released as part of the project “Art of Code”, which contains historical source codes that have fueled the development of computer science up to the present day. On January 31 will be held a hybrid event to celebrate the release and remember Apple’s computing journey with Lisa, considered to be hers “most important flop”.
