Apple’s suppliers have trial production of Apple Watch and MacBook Pro started at factories in Vietnamwith Apple continuing on its path of reducing dependence on China.

Apple had previously moved part of its iPad production from China to Vietnam, a move dictated by the desire to circumvent the heavy but necessary lockdown measures imposed by the Beijing government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and which have had significant repercussions. on at least half of Apple’s suppliers.

An anonymous source close to Apple’s supply chain movements told a Nikkei Asia that “AirPods, Apple Watch, HomePods and more … Apple has big plans in Vietnam, in addition to iPhone manufacturing. MacBook components have become more modular than in the past, which makes it easier to produce laptops outside China. But how to make us cost-competitive is another challenge. ”

In particular, precisely with regard to MacBook Pro, that its modular nature requires an assembly that requires a large chain of suppliers that currently does not yet exist in a country like Vietnam. For Apple Watch the speech seems to be simpler, and Luxshare and Foxconn have already started the test production. Although the supply chain required for the production of the Apple Watch is smaller than other devices, its assembly requires high precision and therefore it is necessary for Apple to ensure that the production lines it uses meet its high quality standards.

If the trial production confirms the possibility of making Apple Watch in Vietnam, it would be the cut of an important milestone for the country, demonstrating the advancement of its technological production capacity.
