Assassin’s Creed Valhalla triumphs at the Grammys: best soundtrack

It’s official! The first video game to triumph at the Grammy Awards in the category “Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media” is Assassins Creed Valhalla, beating out the remaining candidates. Also in contention were Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy and Old World, but Stephanie Economou’s work prevailedas stated on the official site of the Grammys (in SOURCE).

Specifically, the prize was won for the soundtrack composed for the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC. This is how the composer commented on her first success in this area.

“I’m honoured, especially since this is the first year this category exists, so it’s great, it’s a great thing, I feel very accepted by this community and I’m beyond grateful to be here. […]The main people I want to thank for this victory are the musicians, the soloists who made this soundtrack and everyone who made it really special. I share this moment with you.”

Stephanie is known in the industry and has worked on countless projects, most of them in film and TV. For example she is the composer of the Netflix TV series, Jupiter’s Legacy, based on the comic series by Mark Millar, but also wrote the music for the series High Water, the second season of Manhunt: Deadly Games and two episodes of the Disney+ documentary series, Marvel 616directed by Gillian Jacobs and Alison Brie, and boasts many other collaborations.

Although this is the first year that a Grammy Award category aimed at video game music has appeared, it is not the first project connected to this segment to win, and it is enough to go back a year to find an illustrious precedent. Last year, the 8-Bit Big Band, which for those who aren’t familiar with it is a mixed-member Jazz/Pops orchestra (30-65) based in New York City, won a Grammy for Best arrangement of the cover of Meta Knight’s Revenge, a song featured in Kirby Superstar, the famous 1996 SNES title.
