ASUS on the ROG Phone family has always chosen to never stop. At every possibility that opened on the horizon to make its smartphones even more powerful, it never pulled back. He did it for example with ROG Phone 5s and Qualcomm’s updated Snapdragon 888+ and does it this year with the new ROG Phone 6D (and 6D Ultimate) and processor. Mediatek Dimensity 9000+ 3.2 GHz octa core.

For those who follow this world a bit, this is certainly a somewhat particular choice, since it has always been associated with maximum power and maximum performance in the Android world only (or almost) the processors premium by Qualcomm. The choice to adopt a Mediatek CPU is therefore at least bizarre. It still makes sense, given that Mediatek has managed to bring out a lot of raw power thanks to this CPU and that in a smartphone gaming some subtleties about biometric unlocks or photo processing are of relative importance.

We therefore tested this new one with particular curiosity ASUS ROG Phone 6D in the Ultimate version. Compared to the previous model the difference as well as in the processor is in the cooling system, although in the Ultimate version, equipped with a new Aero Active Portal, a door on the back of the smartphone that physically opens when the supplied AeroActive Cooler 6 fan is attached. In this way, a unique air tunnel is created that flows inside the smartphone pushed by the external fan. An engineering solution that is fascinating and allows the smartphone to lower its temperature by several degrees during the most extreme operation.

This need to cool the smartphone more probably arises upstream. In our tests we found ASUS ROG Phone 6D Ultimate can get extremely hot in prolonged use of particularly energy-intensive games. In the case of benchmarks and stress tests, the smartphone even became incandescent. These are obviously extreme situations and cannot be replicated in everyday life, but in any case they show that the use of Aero Active Cooler 6 together with the new system is subjected to important and long-lasting stresses. Aero Active Portal becomes almost indispensable for the smartphone to guarantee optimal performance during the game.

There would be many things to say about the gaming experience of this ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, but they are essentially the same as ROG Phone 6 Pro. Read his review to be sure not to miss anything, but certainly among these qualities we want to remember the excellent audio quality, the excellent customization of the gaming experience and the convenience of being able to take advantage of the virtual triggers as physical keys, especially when coupled to the 4 keys on the back of the fan of the Aero Active Cooler 6.

What changes in daily experience then? From our tests little and the little that changes is not always positive. An update arrived during the test improved the general fluidity of the system, which although excellent is not entirely free from sporadic micro lag. Almost common situations we would dare to say in other smartphones but that on ROG Phone they had never been present. The screen is still the excellent 6.78 “inch AMOLED of the past but in rare cases its 165 Hz maximum refresh rate they are frustrated by a little hiccup of the animations. We repeat that on other interfaces they are almost the rule, but they had never been on ROG Phone. Other updates could certainly refine the situation.

Let’s touch on the other areas quickly: the camera is still the triptych 50 megapixel main, 13 megapixel wide angle and 5 megapixel macro. The front is still 12 megapixel. We didn’t notice any major changes, except perhaps a slight lower HDR rendering in some particular lighting situations, but nothing really interesting in a gaming smartphone.

The battery compartment has not changed either: 6,000 mAh of battery e 65W ultra fast charging, with various ASUS “prevention” systems, such as optional limited charging, optional slow charging or scheduled charging. Compared to ROG Phone 6 Pro we have not noticed a noticeable change in energy performance, but even here the little change detected was negative. Nothing, however, that really reversed the situation.

ROG Phone 6D has a price position perhaps daughter of the complicated historical period. This is € 1499 for the variant we are reviewing on this page at 1029 € for 6D non-Ultimate. The price is € 100 higher than the Pro model, although here we find free (always and not only for a promotional period) the AeroActive Cooler 6, the comfortable external fan, excellent also and above all for its physical buttons.
