If like us you own many, surely you will not have missed the fact that the size of one Backpack they come classified according to litres. The volume, or capacity, is a key factor to keep in mind when buying a new model. A 15-litre backpack, for example, will be fine for everyday activities, but probably won’t be large enough for a multi-day trip.
Judging the volume of a backpack based on its size is surprisingly difficult. Let’s compare two of my favorite models: the Rains Mini measures 40x29x10 centimeters, against the approximately 45×14 of theHerschel Heritage. Although side-by-side the two backpacks may look quite similar, Rains’ packs nine liters, while the Heritage packs up to 21.5 litres.
But how exactly are the liters of a backpack calculated and which size is right for you? To answer these questions we talked to some brands. How is volume calculated?
When we talk about litres, we immediately think of water. Even though some companies fill their backpacks with liquids, there’s a drier way to determine a model’s capacity. According to Ahren Bonnema, product design manager at JanSport, most brands use small plastic balls (similar to those for ping pong).
“We fill a backpack with these balls, zip everything up and then pour the balls into a very large graduated cylinder with side lines marking the liters – explains Bonnema -. It seems a bit primitive, but it is surprisingly accurate and it is industry standard used by most backpack brands“.
Since something like volume should be universal, the hope is that indications are consistent across brands. “I have personally measured dozens of competitor backpacks and it is not uncommon to come across inaccuracies“, however, adds Bonnema. Countless forums and discussions on Reddit also think so. The reviewers of Tree Line Review, for example, they found that in several cases the volume declared by the companies and the actual volume were different (instead of balls they used beans for their measurements). Those of JanSport were not among the models examined by the site.
