While the return of the Orion capsule of the Artemis I mission is now just over a day away, in recent days the crew that will take part in the private mission in lunar orbit call dearMoon and financed by the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. This is expected to be the first private mission that will use Starship to get into lunar orbit with crews.
The philanthropist has already been in space thanks to a mission aboard the International Space Station (agreed with Roscosmos). But the one that he will have to deal with SpaceX and the new heavy carrier Starship it will be decidedly more complex going well beyond the Earth’s orbit. Of course, there will be no moon landing but also “only” orbiting the Moon will be a decidedly suggestive experience and for this reason scientists have not been chosen but rather people who create content (in different formats).
dearMoon will bring a very special crew into lunar orbit
There mission dearMoon was announced in the second half of 2018 before that Maezawa went to space. At the beginning of 2021 there was the opening of applications to be part of the crew of this mission but only in recent days have the names of the people who will be part of the adventure been revealed in lunar orbit. About one million people from all over the world sent their applications.
As was already clear in the past, it would not have been a purely scientific mission, on the contrary. Scrolling through the list of names, in fact, one does not find people linked to purely scientific fields but rather content creators of various kinds, from photographs, to videos, to music. This is because the aim is to tell the sensations that the eight crew members will experience during the private mission. Here are their names:

- Rhiannon Adam
- Tim Dodd
- Karim Ilya
- Brendan Hall
- Dev D. Joshi
- Kaitlyn Farrington (backup)
- Miyu (backup)
The former is a two-time Grammy nominated US DJ and producer. The second is a South Korean musician (known as TOP) who is part of the band BIGBANG. The third is a multidisciplinary creative from the Czech Republic who has directed campaigns for big names like Google, Apple, Mercedes, etc.. The fourth is an Irish photographer. The fifth is one of the best known youtubers in the aerospace field (coming from the USA). The sixth is a UK photographer who has a predilection for aquatic environments and diving. The seventh is a filmmaker American naturalist. The eighth is an Indian actor as well as influencers on social media. The last two are a US snowboarder (gold medal at the Olympics) and a Japanese dancer and choreographer who are kept as reserves.
As you can read about on the official website from dearMoon the first civilian mission in lunar orbit should take place in 2023. This is a date that, as it stands now, seems rather optimistic considering that Starship it has not yet proved its capabilities in Earth orbit. Among the unknowns there is also the need for the SpaceX rocket to refuel in orbit so as to have the necessary propellant for the entire mission (similar to what will happen with the Artemis lunar lander, albeit with the necessary differences). The overall duration will be one week and, as written above, there will be no moon landing or extravehicular activities.
Yusaku Maezawa he has declared “They’re all great people. They all have beautiful smiles. There isn’t a set task for each of them, but I hope every member of the crew recognizes the responsibility that comes with leaving Earth, traveling around the Moon, and returning within a week”.
