BMW too has decided to equip its electric cars with the Plug & Charge technology which allows to simplify the charging process. This is a solution already adopted by some electric cars such as the Porsche Taycan and the latest electric Mercedes, which allows you to refuel at compatible columns (such as those of IONITY) without using apps or cards. In fact, just connect the cable to the car and the recharge will start automatically.

This is made possible by direct communication between the vehicle and the charging station. Users will only need to have configured a specific account for recharging in their car.

For the moment, the Germans have not made it known on which models this new technical solution will be available. It has not even been clarified whether electric cars already on the road will benefit from this possibility, perhaps through a software update if they were already prepared from the hardware point of view. More information will probably come later as Plug & Charge technology will not be made available immediately.

Indeed, we are talking about mid-2023. The solution that BMW will introduce on its compatible cars will be more flexible than the one already offered today on some electric cars of other brands. In fact, it will not be tied exclusively to a single operator (such as BMW Charging). So, people will be able to set up multiple accounts to be able to use the Plug & Charge system with various infrastructure operators. The only requirement is that these operators are part of the Hubject’s eRoaming platform.

Therefore, BMW aims to make it much easier to refuel its electric cars. This is a very important job given that among the critical issues raised by users who want to buy a battery-powered car there are precisely the difficulties in accessing and using the charging stations. All that remains, therefore, is to wait for more information on this news from the German car manufacturer.
