Bob Odenkirk was at the Venice Film Festival. Or rather there was a film of him, he was in America on the set of the new series that he is shooting, Straight Man from Peter Farrelly (a comedy). The man of the moment since Better Call Saul is finished has participated in an experimental film, something more than small: tiny. Worlds Apart – Distant Worldsshot from Cecilia Miniucchi during lockdown. The director put together some actors, she wrote a script on the fly just so that it could be filmed remotely and made the film giving directions via FaceTime, letting the actors recover with their cell phones.
The result is what you can imagine given the conditions and in a sense, despite being doing interviews to promote the film, Bob Odenkirk admits as well, speaking to several journalists via Zoomwhen he says: “When I accepted we hadn’t started filming the final season of Better Call Saul and we didn’t even know if we would ever restart, I wanted to stay in training. And then you want to know what it is? At the heart of this film was risk and in this business if you don’t risk and throw yourself you are dead. There are hundreds of thousands of dollar films that don’t work and I don’t want to be the one who stops taking risks, who doesn’t accept more offers on the fly that he knows little about. If you start to be afraid of this you are really finished“.
Thus it was born Worlds Apartlong gestation if you think that it was filmed in 2020, and has now ended at the Giornate degli authors, autonomous and parallel section of the Venice Film Festival.
Point blank: How would Saul Goodman react to the lockdown?
“It would have freaked out and sued the coronavirus probably. He would have been really frustrated because he thrives on social interactions and not finding himself alone, especially with his thoughts“.
Given that Worlds Apart is set in those lockdown days, did what you feel coincide with what the characters felt?
“Absolutely yes. We were in that situation where you understand that someone else is taking care of it and you have no control. You can just wait for everything to work out. I felt weird and used those feelings for the part. In the movie the TV is always on and I also left it on for weeks tuned to the news. I didn’t even know what I was listening for, maybe waiting for the word vaccine or a positive outcome“.
