Good news for owners of a Mac that is still compatible with Boot Camp (basically: with Intel processor) interested in installing a partition with Windows: Apple has updated its utility by adding support to the WPA3 security protocol for the Wi-Fi driver.
The update is important because WPA2 was irrevocably hacked several years ago – maybe the risks are very low in domestic environments, but for working environments and shops the matter is more serious. The WPA3 protocol was introduced a few years ago, and in addition to ensuring more robust security, it is better optimized for IoT devices.
The new version of Boot Camp is 6.1.16, and a bit of a surprise … It is not the highest: 6.1.17 has been circulating for some months now, which includes the drivers to use the Studio Display and is only available for those who own this product. In any case, in addition to the Wi-Fi news, the update corrects a problem with the Bluetooth driver that could under certain circumstances cause problems with the operation of the technology after the device wakes up from standby or hibernation.
We remember that to update Boot Camp drivers just open the Start menu when Windows is running and open its Apple Software Update app.
For the moment, we said, Boot Camp remains a prerogative of Macs with Intel processors: the most recent devices, with proprietary Apple Silicon chips, have to “settle” for virtual machines of software such as Parallels. Apple has very clearly indicated that the ball is in Microsoft’s court; the Redmond giant may not have acted yet due to exclusive agreements (in the ARM field) signed with Qualcomm in the past. However, these agreements are expiring.
