John Durham
lost again in court on Tuesday as a jury acquitted
Igor Danchenko
of lying to the FBI. But the special counsel has already won the larger battle to expose the dirty political machinations behind the FBI’s Russia collusion probe of the 2016
Donald Trump
campaign.
Mr. Durham’s investigation uncovered that Mr. Danchenko was the primary source for the infamous
Christopher Steele
dossier that the FBI based much of its probe on, and his claims were false. But the jury may not have believed the FBI was a victim when Mr. Durham also exposed the bureau’s own disgraceful behavior.
To wit, the FBI’s decision to hide the dossier’s political provenance (paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign), its deceptions to the secret court that approved its surveillance applications, and its refusal to publicly acknowledge that the dossier and the collusion accusations were false. The jury can be forgiven for doubting the FBI was duped.
Mr. Durham may be winding down his investigation, but he is still obliged to produce a report to the Attorney General that sums up his efforts and what he learned. He can knit together the information he’s been relaying piecemeal through court filings. Please bring it on, and don’t spare the details or any of the participants. His report should be devoted to educating the public about what really happened, and why.
No doubt some of those participants will lobby Attorney General
Merrick Garland
to keep a report confidential.
Obama
-era Justice Department flack
Matthew Miller
is already suggesting Mr. Durham shouldn’t be “the person that gets to have the final word on the Russia investigation.” Really?
Former Attorney General
Bill Barr
made special counsel
Robert Mueller’s
report public, though it failed to disclose the dirty details that Mr. Durham found. Mr. Mueller, current FBI director
Christopher Wray,
and dozens of other DOJ officials would prefer that the public be kept in the dark about one of the worst abuses in FBI history.
Mr. Durham, who was appointed by Mr. Barr, is the only reason America has had a glimpse of the FBI abuses. Any attempt to squelch his report would compound the scandal.
