The CBSE has directed all the affiliated schools to adopt the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF-FS) 2022 developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) which was introduced in October 2022. To implement the NCF-FS, the schools will have to introduce three years of pre-primary schooling, for five years of foundational learning.
Apart from the nursery and KG, there should be one more class at the pre-primary level, while classes I and II will be included at the primary level. Schools that already have pre-primary classes are in the process of introducing lower KG. Government schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas will introduce all three pre-primary classes as they begin schooling from class I.
Speaking to Education Times, Joseph Emmanuel, director (Academics), CBSE, says, “To fulfil the objectives mentioned in NCF-FS 2022, schools have been advised to follow the new structure of five years of early childhood education and include three years of Balvatika or Nursery classes. Schools would follow activity-based play way methods in the Balvatika classes that would create an element of inquisitiveness among the students. Attention would also be given to the health, hygiene, nutrition, etc of students in the Balvatika classes. If such a caring approach is adopted in early classes, students’ cognitive and affective domains would be strengthened in successive years.”
“In addition to this, teachers would be supported with the requisite training to handle Balvatika or Nursery classes. NCERT has released ‘Jadui Pitara’ which is the resource material for teaching in nursery classes to promote experiential and joyful learning,” adds Emmanuel.
“New textbooks for classes I and II are also being developed by NCERT in accordance with the objectives of NCF- FS,” informs Emmanuel.
Sudha Acharya, chairperson, National Progressive Schools Conference, says, “CBSE has decided to adopt NCF from the next academic session to bring students in the age group of 3-6 years into the formal education system. This would ensure that the holistic development of students takes place as they would be taught through play-based, inquiry, and activity-based pedagogies. In addition to this Jadui-Pitara will create magic in the classrooms.”
