Are you sure the life you are living is real? And if it were a virtual world, a gigantic neuro-simulation like that of Matrix? Or an extreme reality TV experiment like the one in which Jim Carrey moves unwittingly into The Truman show? Or the sitcom of the movie Pleasantvilleset in a quiet, tidy town under bright sunshine and the best possible weather?
We’re not giving away too much of the plot of the new movie by Olivia Wilde, Don’t Worry Darling, presented at the Venice Film Festival and out in cinemas on 22 September, because from the very first scenes it is evident that the perfect world in which the protagonists move is artificially constructed. How and why is what will be discovered in the finale.
We are in a residential neighborhood somewhere in the California desert. Houses, furniture, cars, all refer to fiftiesindeed to the film imagery of the 1950s.
Jack (Harry Styles) and his wife Alice (Florence Pugh) they are a perfect match just like the place they live in. Beautiful, happy, in love. Every morning, he gets in the car with the basket that Alice has lovingly prepared for him and goes to work. And the other husbands do the same: together they start the engine of their shiny cars and they start and in single file, while their respective spouses wave bye bye. At least a suspicious synchrony that concerns many other aspects of community life (and which is underscored by the inclusion of Esther Williams’ synchronized swimming scenes in the film).
The men won’t be back until the evening, in time for dinner. Meanwhile, in their clean and well-furnished homes, wives do what is expected of them every day: take care of the housework and, during free time, and has plenty of it, chat between drinks, or go to shopping in the mall.
The “problem” is that none of them know what their husbands do. The only information given to them is that they are involved in a top secret project for the “development of innovative materials“With the ambitious and vague goal of”change the world“, on behalf of a mysterious company, the Victory, led by Frank (Chris Pine).
