Doom runs on a John Deere tractor: mowing down demons in a cornfield

Doomthe famous 1993 video game that gave popularity to the first-person shooter genre, can be played (or, at least, can “run”) today on virtually any platform: on the Web there are various experiments, successfully completed, which show the famous FPS capable of running on almost anything with a chip and a display (also on the Touch Bar of the MacBook Pros).

The latest gimmick by security researcher Sick Codes, who presented his work at Def Con in Las Vegas, was to run the game on the onboard systems of a John Deere tractor.

The feat was shown at Def Con, the well-known security conference, as to succeed Sick Codes had to perform a real jailbreak of the John Deere 4240 tractor operating systembased on Linux.

Obviously Doom is a fun pretext to give visibility to the company, as the jailbreaking of John Deere tractor on-board systems is proposed as a way to get around the blockages that the company imposes and that prevent farmers from being able to carry out small repairs on their own. agricultural vehicles, an aspect that has raised several criticisms in the past.

Beyond that, Doom runs in a sort of superimposed window on the original interface of the tractor’s on-board systems and Sick Codes has partnered with the modder Skelegant to create a particular version of the FPS from the agricultural setting, where the player will be called to use a tractor to harvest as many enemies as possible.
