Dyson today announces the full specifications of the headphones Dyson Zoneproposals announced in recent months that are characterized by the combination of the typical audio functions of a headset and an air filtration and purification device through an integrated mask. They will go on sale from January 2023 in China and from March in the US, UK, Hong Kong SAR and Singapore. The result of five years of research and development, Dyson Zone headphones offer up to 50 hours of continuous audio playback, advanced noise cancellation features and faithful full spectrum audio reproduction. Headphones too they capture 99% of polluting particles down to 0.1 microns, while the potassium-enriched K-Carbon activated carbon filters are able to capture the acid gases most associated with urban pollution. The filters last up to 12 months, depending on the geographical location and therefore the level of pollution in the area where you live.

With a product like this Dyson aims to offer its customers a solution that limits the effects of urban pollution, linked both to air quality and to the noise that characterizes city centres. More than half of the world’s population lives in cities; it is expected that by 2050 the proportion will reach 7 out of 10 people. As the urban population grows, so does the associated infrastructure – transport, construction, traffic – which has an impact on the environment by polluting the air and generating noise. It is significant to highlight how in many geographical areas local pollution caused by man is not the greatest threat: in Europe, Western Asia and Africa, the main source of air pollution according to the United Nations Environment Program is the airborne dust by the wind.

Dyson Zone headphones have been designed to take on the twin challenges of city noise and air pollution. Powered by advanced Li-ion batteries and rechargeable via USB-C, headphones offer 50 hours of battery life in audio mode, or 4 hours of battery life in combined purification and audio mode. Dyson Zone charges to 100% in 3 hours. The air purification system provides for the presence of two compressors, positioned in each auricle, which have the task of sucking in the external air, purified through the double-layer filters. Two streams of purified air are then projected towards the nose and mouth, through the removable contactless visor. Electrostatic filters capture 99% of particles down to 0.1 micronwhile the potassium-enriched K-Carbon activated carbon filters capture the acid gases most associated with urban pollution, such as NO2 and SO2.

The product was also designed to deliver immersive, high-fidelity audio, with minimal sound distortion and a wide frequency range, for greater clarity on the bass, mids and highs. Dyson Zone has an additional microphone for telephony, allowing you to make phone calls, record and voice control. This mic combines with the ANC mic to provide a dual microphone beamformingan approach that creates greater clarity in speech transmission by combining the signals from each microphone in a way that allows the system to reject noises from behind and to the sides of the wearer.

Dyson Zone implements a sophisticated active noise cancellation system, based on the use of 11 microphones. Dyson Zone’s ANC system uses eight microphones that monitor surrounding noise 384,000 times per second, delivering up to 38dB of noise cancellation from 20Hz to 20kHz.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ) is one of the most common gaseous pollutants in cities, a by-product of combustion, which can be generated by traffic and construction. Potassium-enriched activated carbon filters specifically capture nitrogen dioxide, along with other acidic gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), to tackle urban pollution. An integrated sensor monitors NO2 levels in the air and ambient noise levels, tracking them in real time via theMy Dyson app. Like Dyson home purifiers, Dyson Zone provides understandable information about your environment and puts it at your disposal to guide you towards healthier habits. An integrated accelerometer monitors user activity, adjusting the purified airflow appropriately when the product is set to automatic mode with the visor on. Head detection enables standby mode to be entered when the product is not being worn; when the removable visor is lowered, the conversation mode is activated, which interrupts the purification and pauses the music, thus intelligently optimizing battery life.

L’My Dyson app can also be used to control the Dyson Zone, adjust the airflow speed and noise canceling mode, and adapt the sound equalization to your preferences, choosing from three modes: Dyson EQ (enhanced), Bass Boost (bassy ) and Neutral (flatter response curve). In the MyDyson app, you can choose to limit the volume following hearing health guidelines.

Dyson Zone falls within the future development plans of the company, focused on expanding their business lines and new product categories. Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer of the company, announced in recent days a £2.75 billion five-year investment plan in new technologies, which places software and connectivity at the heart of the company’s future product pipeline. The goal is to double the portfolio of products and solutions offered to customers by 2025.
