NEW DELHI: Punjab and Uttar Pradesh saw healthy turnouts in the polling on Sunday. While Punjab voted in a single phase, Uttar Pradesh is voting in several phases. It saw an over 60 per cent turnout in the third phase of polling.
Meanwhile, campaigning for the remaining phases of the Uttar Pradesh also continued. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an especially sharp attack on Samajwadi Party accusing it of being sympathetic to terrorists.
Here is a look at the major political developments on Sunday:
Punjab:
The overall voter turnout in Punjab in the single-phase, multi-cornered contest for the 117-member Assembly seats was approximately 70 per cent, election officials said.
Sixty-three per cent of over 2.14 crore voters in Punjab turned out till 5 pm amid minor skirmishes and snags in EVMs.
“The voter turnout was 70 per cent with chances of the final figures likely to increase marginally. Rural areas saw high percentage of polling compared to urban ones,” an electoral officer was quoted by newsagency IANS.
The Malwa region, which has the highest number of 69 seats, saw the highest poll percentage compared to Doaba and Majha regions.
Except some incidents of minor clashes, no major poll-related violence has been reported in the state so far.
Punjab is witnessing a multi-cornered contest with 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders in the fray.
The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
Uttar Pradesh:
Over 60 per cent voting was recorded till 5 pm in 59 assembly constituencies in the third phase of the elections in Uttar Pradesh. The updated approximate voting percentage, according to the Election Commission’s Turnout App till 5 pm, was 60.63 per cent.
The percentage was 63.14 per cent in Hathras, 61.89 per cent in Firozabad, 63.04 per cent in Kasganj, 65.7 per cent in Etah, 61.51 per cent in Mainpuri, 59.13 per cent in Farrukhabad, 61.93 per cent in Kannauj and 58.35 per cent in Etawah.
It was 60.62 per cent in Auraiya, 59.87 per cent in Kanpur Dehat, 56.14 per cent in Kanpur Nagar, 59.93 per cent in Jalaun, 57.71 per cent in Jhansi, 69.05 per cent in Lalitpur, 60.56 per cent in Hamirpur and 64.56 per cent in Mahoba.
As many as 627 candidates are in the fray in the third of the seven phase elections to the 403-member state assembly. Over 2.15 crore people were eligible to vote in 16 districts in this phase.
Meanwhile, days after a court convicted 49 people for the Ahmedabad serial blasts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had vowed to punish the perpetrators even if they took refuge in “paatal”, and accused the Samajwadi Party of being sympathetic to such terrorists.
Addressing a BJP campaign rally in Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, he said he had wondered why the terrorists had opted for “bicycle”, the Samajwadi Party’s election symbol, to plant bombs in the initial blasts in Ahmedabad.
He slammed the Samajwadi Party for being sympathetic towards terrorists and claimed that the previous government headed by it had sought to withdraw cases against several terror accused as “a return gift”.
The BJP government has stalled the development of Uttar Pradesh and it will be removed from power like the Central farm laws were repealed, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said in Unnao.
Manipur:
Condemning the attack on the father of one of his party’s candidates, Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP President Conrad K. Sangma urged the Election Commission to take adequate security measures in Manipur to conduct a violence-free election.
Manipur Deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh and leader of the National People’s Party’s (NPP) said that party’s Andro constituency Candidate L. Sanjoy Singh’s father L. Shamjai Singh was shot in the right shoulder on Friday night while he was at a campaign programme at Yairipok Yambem Leikai.
Unidentified assailants opened fire and Shamjai Singh was hit on the right shoulder and shifted to the hospital, the deputy chief minister said.
Sangma, who visited the hospital to see the condition of Shamjai Singh, said that a party delegation met Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Agrawal and demanded to arrange adequate security to hold the free and fair elections to the Manipur assembly.
FIR against MLA:
A case was registered against BJP leader and party’s MLA in Telangana T Raja Singh over his comments for threatening people to vote for his party in Uttar Pradesh, police said. The Election Commission on Saturday censured Raja Singh and barred him from campaigning for 72 hours.
It also directed the chief electoral officer, Telangana, to register an FIR against Singh under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act.
Accordingly, a case was registered against Singh at a police station here under Section 171C (undue influence at elections) and other provisions of the IPC and under relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act, a senior police officer told PTI.
