A question of terms
The object of the dispute is the definition that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave of what Tesla considers a simple firmware update.
The NHTSA has in fact stated that Tesla will carry out a recall of 1.1 million vehicles for safety reasons. The case concerns the excessive force required to activate the safety mechanism that stops the windows from rising in case they encounter obstacles. Practically the electric windows of Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X they would be insensitive and they would risk crushing the fingers of the unfortunate during the closing phase.
The problem will be solved with a firmware update over the airthe classic OTA software updatewithout requiring Tesla customers to go to the workshop to carry out the intervention.
The terminology is outdated & inaccurate. This is a tiny over-the-air software update. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no injuries.
