In the past few days it had emerged as SpaceX had requested that the US Department of Defense paid for the connectivity service Starlink used by civilians and military in Ukraine during the war. This had caused different types of reactions considering, however, that the company of Elon Musk however it was providing at least some (but not all) of the service for free.
The hardware terminals including satellite dish, router and connection cables were supplied by different countries (for example USA and Poland) while the point of greatest impact would however be linked to the actual connection. The same Musk in a tweet he wrote that the cost to the company would be “80 million dollars and will exceed 100 million dollars by the end of the year“. Because of this SpaceX it would have turned to the Pentagon for reimbursement of the costs incurred and those that it will still have to bear.

The precise costs of the whole operation linked to Starlink are not yet clear except for what was stated in the letter sent by the company to Pentagon. Overall, about 25,000 units would have been delivered as hardware, while in general the cost would be around 120 million dollars by the end of 2022 and with an estimate of 400 million dollars for the whole of 2023.
Again with regard to costs, as written above, 85% of the connection terminals would have been paid in full or in part, while only 30% of the Starlink connectivity would be paid. This would be the version “Premium” which offers better performance but at a higher cost which however would not have been charged to civilians and military who are in Ukraineinstead, payment of the standard version would have been proposed. This would mean paying around $ 500 / month for a service that would cost $ 4500 / month.
The maintenance of the infrastructure both as regards the actual satellites and the IT security part (with attacks of various types that would be caused by Russia and that they would have blocked all other means of communication, essential on the war front) would cost a SpaceX approximately $ 20 million a month, as reported by Musk.
After the controversy aroused by the story reported by CNN the same Elon Musk he wrote in a tweet yesterday “to hell … even if Starlink is still losing money and other companies are getting billions of taxpayer dollars, we will continue to finance the Ukrainian government for free”. The reference is probably to the arms manufacturers who are paid by the US government for the supply at large amounts. In particular Musk also pointed out like Lockheed Martin and Boeing they would have obtained contracts worth 60 billion dollars for the part relating to the communications used by the US Department of Defense.
