Prayagraj: Dr Probal Niyogi, who is presently professor at the department of Surgery at Motilal Nehru Medical College, has been elected as the next president of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI).
He is the first surgeon from Prayagraj to be elected as the National President in the history of Surgeons of India for 85 years and only Six people from Uttar Pradesh have got this opportunity.
In a one-sided contest in the online voting that lasted from October 1 to October 31, Dr CR K Prasad of Telangana was defeated by a huge margin of 5114 votes as against 1135 votes.
Dr Probal Niyogi did his MBBS from AFMC Pune and then did his post-graduation in surgery from Motilal Nehru Medical College and was appointed as professor in the department.
At ASI, he is currently the vice president/president elect (2022) of Uttar Pradesh chapter of ASI and is a member of the academic council of ASI (2021-23), North Zone Co-Ordinator for RRC (Regional Refresher Course) 2022.
“I started my journey in medicine from the precincts of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1983 and graduated in 1987. After my Housemanship at AIIMS Delhi, I did my post graduation in surgery from MLN Medical College, Allahabad and was further trained in the UK, where I spent the next five years in general and gastrointestinal surgery and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1997”, says Dr Niyogi.
Despite a comfortable job with the NHS, UK, he returned to India in 2000 and took up the job of a consultant surgeon at the regional cancer centre, KNMH, Allahabad, wherein he initiated Laparoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery at the Institute. Two years later, he joined the MLN Medical College as lecturer in 2002 where he is still working as a Professor of surgery.
He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and being an avid teacher have been conferred with many awards, including the best senior surgical teacher award, UP in 2020.
“I am thrilled and wish to serve our parent body, the Association of surgeons of India with renewed vigour to take ASI to greater heights”, said Dr Niyogi while talking to TOI on phone from Chennai.
