Remember when President Joe Biden was a “centrist” in search of “unity”? Yeah, me neither.
The man whose administration refers to women as “birthing people” has now ratcheted up his attacks on so-called “MAGA Republicans.” Dating back to Mr. Biden’s speech in front of a blood-red, Bond villain-style backdrop, Democrats are clearly shifting strategy leading up to November and setting their sights on Trump voters. Accusing his predecessor of attacking democracy and undermining equality, Mr. Biden is blatantly associating “extreme-minded Republicans” with “anger,” “division,” “hate,” and “violence.”
It’s quite a divisive language for a purported proponent of unity. The question becomes: What is an “extreme-minded Republican”?
Is it someone who questions Mr. Biden’s tax-and-spend economic policies? Because those people are, according to the president, “sapping the strength of a lot of families.”
Is it someone who supports legal immigration? Because Mr. Biden believes those people use the rule of law as a “weapon” against immigrants.
Or is it someone who opposes Roe v. Wade? Because Mr. Biden considers those people “cruel” and a danger to women.
It’s funny how pro-life Americans—that is, half of America—may be considered “extreme,” but Democratic politicians like John Fetterman are “mainstream” despite promoting abortion up until birth. Republicans are “extreme,” yet Mr. Biden is all too willing to campaign for a Pennsylvania Senate candidate who backs late-term abortion—a policy supported by barely 10% of Americans.
But that’s exactly the point. To Democrats like Mr. Biden and Mr. Fetterman, all Republicans are extreme. Critics of the Democratic Party platform—which advocates for abortion until birth and whatever “environmental justice” means—are considered extreme, regardless of what liberal lunacy of the day they may be opposing.
Democrats may paint “MAGA Republicans” as fringe and far-right, but Americans should really think about what they’re arguing in the place. Not only is the notion of “making America great again” supposedly “semi-fascist” now, but so is the decision to support a sitting president who earned more votes in 2020 than Barack Obama did in either 2008 or 2012. More than 74 million Americans must be extreme then too since Trump is still extremely popular within the Republican Party.
Mr. Biden’s newfound commitment to otherization will fail on two fronts. First and foremost, his willingness to vilify Republicans directly contradicts his Inaugural Address, which mentioned “unity” nine times. Mr. Biden campaigned on unity, claiming Americans are not at war “with one another.” Now, before the next election cycle, federal officials have already raided the private residence of Mr. Biden’s predecessor while his latest political gamble is to turn Trump voters into fascists.
On the second front, Mr. Biden is invoking a political strategy that miserably failed Hillary Clinton in 2016. After calling Trump supporters at the time a “basket of deplorables,” Mrs. Clinton only fanned the flames of backlash against the Washington, D.C. establishment and Beltway insiders like the Clintons. She lost the “silent majority” of voters in swing states, where she fittingly refused to campaign at all.
Six years later, Mrs. Clinton’s basket of deplorables has become a red wave that remains intact today. That same red wave is now poised to win back the House and perhaps even the Senate.
Mr. Biden is at serious risk of repeating Mrs. Clinton’s mistake, demeaning tens of millions of Americans for daring to disagree with him. By demonizing Republicans, he is also drawing on the Obama playbook, which resulted in the Tea Party Revolution of 2010 and the Trump wave less than a decade later.
Generally speaking, the recipe for broad-based political support is not to divide America into “good” and “evil.” Nor will it be a winning strategy in 2022.
Mr. Biden’s divisiveness will only unify Americans against him. And it will spell the end of his presidency come 2024.
