Fragmentation is still a problem for Android

In the sector of smartphone there has been talk since the dawn of time of the eternal confrontation between Android and iOS, two different operating systems that offer pros and cons from different points of view. One of the green robot’s Achilles heels is fragmentation.

By this term we mean the fact that the distribution of the Android versions is not uniform on all devices, because many models remain out of date and therefore stuck at an outdated version of the operating system. Over time this phenomenon has become increasingly evident, and has generated many security problems, leaving older devices exposed to potential vulnerability.

Even today, in smaller percentages, versions of Android dating back to 4-5 years ago still survive. Every month Google releases a report with updated data on the distribution of the various Android versions, i.e. the percentage, compared to the total of all Android devices, on which each version of the operating system is installed.

The latest report released by BigG highlights how significant the fragmentation still is on devices currently on the market that adopt Android. The graph belowmade with data combined from the researches of 9to5Googleshows how Android 12 is popular on the 13.3% of Android devices, a few weeks after the official launch of Android 13.

Currently the most popular version remains, as happened in May, Android 11 with the 27%. Android 10 is still of particular relevance, widespread for the 22.3% while Android Pie (9.0) still stands at 14.5%with a percentage that exceeds incredibly the spread of Android 12.

The problem of Android fragmentation therefore remains quite evident, in a context in which the version released four years ago is more widespread than latest stable version released by Google. All this within a few weeks of the release of a new stable release.

Clearly a direct comparison cannot be made with iOS, since devices produced by many manufacturers are based on Android different policies software support with different timingwhich stretch significantly if we consider the non-high-end models.
