The plastic used for the preservation of food and drinks, but also for other less known purposes. For example plastic is used to prevent certain products from degrading, often as a micro barrier. the case of some pills, or even microencapsulation pesticides and herbicides.
These plastics, however, are very persistent in the environment, and therefore MIT and BASF they searched for a more sustainable alternative. The research was conducted by the MIT professor Muchun Liualong with five other BASF scholars, divided between the United States and Germany.

The team identified a possible alternative in silk, or rather in some proteins of this precious material. The new material can in fact be created starting from silk proteins, without using laborious methods. You don’t need the cocoons of the worms like those used for the production of fabrics, but even lesser quality silk is enoughdissolved in water.
In this way the production can be done more or less anywhere in the world, and not only in the areas specialized in silk, and you can also get it from recycled silk, thus extending the life of the product which would otherwise become waste. A first attempt was made with a microencapsulated and water-soluble herbicide, used in a corn field, and the yield was even higher than those already on the market.
