Research engineers from University of New South Wales (UNSW) have made a new one electric motor capable of raising the potential of normal motors a permanent magnetsthanks to the very high rotation speed.

Oddly inspired in design from a bridge in South Korea, the engine of the UNSW can reach rotation speed of over 100,000 RPM, roughly double that recorded by similar faster engines. The constructive method also the amount of rare earths needed decreaseslowering the environmental impact of the engine as well as the cost of production.

One of the consequences of the high rotation speed, the increase in power density, a fundamental factor for obtaining excellent performance, taking up little space and, above all, little weight. These factors can significantly influence the range of electric vehicles.

Explains Dr. Guoyu Chu: “One of the trends for electric vehicles to have motors spinning at higher speeds. Every manufacturer of electric vehicles is trying to develop high-speed motors and the reason is that the nature of the law of physics therefore allows to reduce the size of that unit. And with a smaller unit, it weighs less and consumes less energy and therefore gives the vehicle a greater range. With this research project we have tried to reach the absolute maximum speed, we have recorded over 100,000 revolutions per minute and the peak power density of about 7 kW per kilogram.. “

The system was also meant to be scalable and adaptable to the different needs of producers, and can be modified at will with a study of about 6-12 months. Adds Dr. Chu: “We have our own machine design software package where we can enter the speed or power density requirements and run the system for a couple of weeks and it offers us the optimal design that meets those needs“.
