Update one Pixel smartphones may soon require one handful of minutes. The (welcome) novelty is reported by Mishaal Rahmanwho on Twitter reveals how Google is working to make installing OTA updates faster than it is now on all devices that support virtual A/B partitions through compression mechanism.
Not too long ago, an over-the-air update could take up to twenty minutes, including shutdowns, restarts in recovery mode and app optimization. With i Seamless Update the matter has changed, given that with this solution the system update comes installed in the background on the inactive partition which, once the smartphone is restarted, becomes the active partition. Unfortunately this is a workaround not yet adopted by the vast majority of manufacturers, which therefore cannot benefit from the optimization processes that this entails. Samsung could integrate it into One UI 6.
For Mountain View, however, you can do even better than Seamless Updates, since the intention is to make the update process even faster. The patch set sent to the gerrit of the Android Open Source Project would seem to be proof of that. And, apparently, the times would be reduced up to ten minutes at the most: the example shown is that of a Pixel 6 Pro which, once it received the patches, completed the OTA installation of 2.2GB in 13 minutes, 10 less than in the previous scenario.

As can also be seen from the image shared by Rahman on Twitter, another case concerned the 376MB incremental OTA update: from 22 minutes without a patch, it went to 16 minutes. Perhaps not a radical drop as in the case of a complete update, but still a clear example of how Google’s intuition is effective.
