Eventually too Google has announced layoffs. The company has been among those that have weathered the longest wave of job cuts that began last year in the technology sector, which has now left tens of thousands of people at home. The announcement comes directly from the CEO of the group Sundar Pichai, who wrote a memo to employees and a few hours later published it on the official blog The Keyword (you can read it in its entirety by following the SOURCE link at the bottom of the article).
The cuts affect around 12,000 people, representing 6% of Google’s overall workforce. Pichai says those involved are scattered around the world, and have already been contacted directly. At least in the United States, severance packages include:
- Full salary for the entire notice period (minimum 60 days)
- TFR equal to 16 weeks of salary + 2 weeks for each year of seniority
- Full payment of 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation days
- 6 months of health insurance, job search support and immigration support
We recall that Google is part of Alphabet, a holding company that controls many other companies, including Waymo, Wing, Intrinsic, Fiber, DeepMind, Verily and X. Just a few days ago layoffs were announced at Verily and Intrinsic – extremely smaller in numbers absolute, but more significant when looking at the percentages.
Just a couple of days ago Microsoft announced the layoff of 10,000 people; Amazon 18,000 people at the beginning of the month; towards the end of last year Twitter shed about 4,000 of them (and the cuts continue). And I’m just the tip of the iceberg of a much more widespread phenomenon. And the reasons, as always, are largely attributable to the pandemic. Pichai himself explains the situation quite well in this passage:
We have gone through periods of massive growth over the past two years. To support this growth, we have made assumptions for an economic reality different from the one we find ourselves in today.
