Also on the Kilimanjarothe highest mountain in the entire African continent, has arrived high speed internet: the Tanzanian authorities announced it in recent days. The national telecommunications company, TTCL, has installed repeaters up to an altitude of about 3,568 meters, while the peak of the mountain, which reaches 5,895 meters, is still not covered; it should be by the end of the year.
It’s easy to make jokes about high-flying selfies – and it’s undeniable that this novelty will offer climbers new opportunities for content creation, between live streams or even just simple social posts in real time – but the main reason for the initiative is the safety. The presence of internet connectivity can give local climbers and guides an extra tool to overcome difficult situations, which at high altitudes can become extremely dangerous very quickly.

Communications Minister Nape Nnauye hopes that the TTCL will bring connectivity to other important tourist resorts in the country, in order to increase revenues in the sector – the Kilimanjaro National Park alone has generated revenues equal to 1.4 billion dollars in 2021, and every year around 35,000 people attempt to climb it. At the moment we have no technical details on the technical characteristics of the service. It is worth remembering that Kilimanjaro is not the first mountain to offer internet connectivity, indeed: Huawei took it to the top of Everest almost ten years ago.
