How to make backups on Samsung (smartphones and tablets)

You have just purchased one Samsung smartphones and, after the usual initial configuration, you forgot to set a very important option, especially in the long term: the backups.

Make a backup on your phone it is in fact very important to prevent possible setbacks (very annoying, in reality!) dictated by malfunction or damage, or simply to make the transition to the new samsung smartphone (for example, you have a Galaxy S22 at home and you want to replace it with Galaxy S23).

In the same way as seen with the backups on Xiaomialso Samsung decided to make available to its users a convenient proprietary program for storing all smartphone data.

Specifically, we are talking about a very vast material, which includes for example:

• Call logs
• Alerts and alarm clocks
• Calendars
• SMS messages
• Home screen options
• Phone settings

Especially if you decide to replace the old Samsung with a new smartphone from the Korean company, this method will allow you to create a “photocopy” of the current device, greatly simplifying the mobile phone change.

NB: Be careful, though, because this method will not store some files any longer personal such as photos, videos and audios. To keep this type of data, we suggest you read a specific paragraph dedicated to Smart Switch, or use an external platform such as Google Photos. Remember, however, that each Samsung account comes with 15 gigabytes of free storage space. Obviously, Samsung Cloud it is only available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

For make a Samsung backup with Samsung Cloud first you need to own a samsung account.

Generally, the creation of this profile is done during the initial configuration of the mobile phone, but alternatively it is always possible to register on the platform by clicking on this address.

If you own a samsung accountmake sure you are connected to a stable and secure Wi-Fi network and do the following:

1. First, unlock your smartphone by entering any recognition method you set (fingerprint, 2D unlocking with face, pattern or PIN) and open the app Settings (that is, the one with the gray background and the gear in the middle)
2. Scroll down until you find the section “Accounts and backups“, then click on “Run Backup” in the section “Samsung Cloud“. We will talk about the other sections in the next paragraphs
3. A screen will appear listing the apps and services that can be backed up. For example: the list of applications, personalization of the home screen, settings, contacts, SMS messages (not WhatsApp, which we will discuss later), logs of calls made and received. For each of these, press the switch to activate data storage
4. At this point, click on “Run Backup Now” to start the saving procedure.
5. A screen will show you the progress of the backup for each of the selected services and applications, complete with an underline of the last backup created (date and time). The procedure could take some time, especially in the case of large amounts of data to be stored
6. At the end of the procedure, tap on “Done” at the bottom of the screen. Super easy, isn’t it?

NB: You will not be able to back up files larger than one gigabyte. In any case, apps like Contacts And Calendar they don’t count towards the free 15 gigabytes of storage offered for each Samsung account.

And to store photos? We suggest, in this sense, to use an external service such as for example Google Photosthe factory installed app on your device.

Enter the app in question and click on your profile icon at the top, then tap on the item “Turn on backup“. Nothing more simple and immediate.

As we wrote earlier, it is possible make a backup on Samsung with Google Drive. This option is certainly for those who don’t want to tie themselves too much to Samsung, for example when they decide to replace their phone with a new one, of course android.

But how to do it, then? The steps are more or less the themselvesit being understood that for the rest we suggest you – as already advocated at the beginning of the article – to read our in-depth article that we linked to you previously.

However, let’s not get lost in further chatter and let’s get to the heart of the procedure. Before proceeding, make sure you are connected to one WIFI network stable and secure.

1. First, unlock your smartphone by entering any recognition method you set (fingerprint, 2D unlocking with face, pattern or PIN) and open the app Settings

3. If this is your first time doing this, a service welcome screen will appear on your screen”Backup by Google One“. 4. Press on “Activate“
5. Select the apps and services you want to keep
6. Tap on the item “Back up now” and confirm via biometric authentication (fingerprint reader, face unlock or the classic entry of the PIN code or sequence where set). The procedure could take some time, especially in the case of large amounts of data to be kept.

To store photos and videos, you can use the platform as before Google Photos.

Still staying at home Samsungthere is another way to make backup on Galaxy phone: Smart Switches. For those unfamiliar with it, it is a proprietary service (that is, made by the same Korean company) which allows you to transfer everything present in your mobile phone to another Galaxy device or on a external storage device.

DOWNLOAD FROM PLAY STORE

It is as if we were essentially creating a “photocopy” of the telephone. This setting is especially recommended for those who want to switch to a new Galaxy smartphone and needs to move a large amount of data.

In fact, unlike the two storage methods seen in the previous paragraphs, Smart Switch allows you to make a backup much more full.

When we talk about complete, we intend to refer above all to those elements that have so far been excluded with the Samsung Cloud procedure, such as for example the images and, in general, all stored files on the phone.

Furthermore, the procedure follows a very different logic compared to the one seen above, as the whole process takes place entirely in wireless mode or with the aid of a cable. We anticipate it immediately: choosing one or the other is indifferent. A matter of taste, one might almost say.

If you want to transfer data from old to new Samsungthen proceed as follows:

1. First download the Smart Switch app from the Play Store on both devices. You can easily reach the download page by clicking on the badge shown a few lines above
2. Open the Smart Switch app on the “source” device, i.e. the one from which you want to move data
3. Open the Smart Switch app on the “receiving” device, i.e. the one that will literally receive the backup
4. Select the transfer mode, which as we have anticipated can be wireless or via cable. If you go with the former, make sure you keep the two phones very close to each other
5. Wait for the two devices to “talk” to each other: the Smart Switch app will in fact put them in communication
6. On the “receiving” phone, select the data you wish to import and press “Next” to start the data export process
7. Follow the procedure shown on the screen to finalize everything and, where required, enter the credentials (username and password) of your Google account on the “receiving” Samsung smartphone

As we wrote before, Samsung Smart Switches it also allows you to save data to an external storage device, such as a USB drive or a micro-SD card (in the latter case, on compatible Samsung smartphones, mind you).

If this is your case, do it like this:

1. Connect an external storage drive to your phone
2. Unlock your smartphone and open the app Settings
3. Scroll down to find “Accounts and backups“, then click on this item
4. In the Smart Switch section, tap on “External memory transfer“
5. Select the device on which you want to back up the data (so, in the case above, the USB stick or micro-SD card, for example)
6. Select the data to be stored and press “Come on” to start the saving procedure

Regardless of the type of procedure selected, the data backup on samsung does not include some information from external services such as Whatsappwhich is one of the most downloaded apps on mobile phones.

For make a backup of WhatsApp chats proceed like this:

1. Open the app Whatsapp
2. On the main screen, press the three vertical dots at the top right to access the main application menu, then select the “Settings“
3. First press on “Chats” and then on “Chat backup“
4. Tap on “Run Backup” to perform a backup of the chats (single and group) on Google Drive. On the same page you can adjust some very important settings, such as the frequency of the backup (weekly, daily, monthly, or manual) and the way in which to make the backup (Wi-Fi network or data network. We suggest the former)
