On the last point it is important to underline that the Hungarian law provides for a maternity leave of 24 weeks, which can be extended up to three years of the child’s life, while fathers are entitled to only 5 days of paid leave, to be taken only within the first month of the child’s life. On the basis of this and reading the other points, it is therefore noted that the role of the woman as mother is central in the politics of Orbán’s family, while that of the father is not even considered.

The premises of Orbán’s family policy

The Hungarian demographic and family policy is based on thefar-right party ideology Fidesz, of which Orbán is the president. The current political line was recently reaffirmed by the premier himself during a long speech on July 23, which created quite a few problems in the European Union for openly racist phrases.

“The internationalist left argues that Europe by nature is inhabited by mixed-race peoples. It is a historical and semantic sleight of hand, because it confuses two different things. There is a world where the peoples of Europe where the peoples of Europe have mingled with those who come from outside Europe and this is a mestizo world. Then there is our world – has said Orbán -. This is why we have always fought, we do not want to become mixed race peoples“.

And it is from this refusal to mix with others “Stingray” which kicks off Hungary’s population growth policy, aimed at encouraging the procreation of at least two children per family and with strong incentives to get to four. For Orbán, in fact, the greatest danger in the modern world is represented by “Islamic civilization that is constantly moving towards Europe” which would be from the South “Occupying and flooding the West”.

The solution to stop this “flood” it is therefore the increase in the birth rate resulting from unions of people from “European peoples”. A birth rate that also serves to strengthen one strictly heterosexual family and to point out the clear division of gender supported by Fidesz and Orbán, for which “A father is a man and a mother is a woman” and nothing more. In fact, by law in Hungary the family is only made up of “A man and a woman” and, clearly, homosexual couples have neither the right to marry nor to adopt minors, according to the so-called “Child protection law”.

“Some unintelligent say: there are too many of us. The intelligent answer: we are few. The number is the strength of the peoples who have the necessary land: and this does not even need to be demonstrated “, these words they were pronounced by Benito Mussolini while he was dictator in Italy, to support the fascist demographic policy.

Like the Hungarian model, fascist demographic policies were also based on supremacy, race strength and need to defend it from the so-called “hybridization”. Likewise, fascism exalted a model of family founded on the identity of paternity and maternitywith a clear division of gender and roles between man and woman, whose purpose was procreation, understood as a social obligation to make the nation great.

Consequently, like Orbán, fascism put in place multiple initiatives in favor of the birth rate and the family, such as tax exemptions and tax reductions for large families, bonuses for the most prolific mothers, marriage and birth rates. Furthermore, always on the line of similarities with the most recent Hungarian policies, the regime also implemented one campaign against abortionidentified by the Rocco Code among the crimes against the integrity of the lineage, and against the propaganda and use of contraceptives.

However, the intense demographic battle of the fascist regime did not get the desired resultssince the birth rate continued its structural tendency to decline, according to a trend that has characterized all the countries of Western Europe.
